I have been sighted anywhere from 5000-3000 yards. This is subject to the type of vessel. Warships are more alert than a merchant. Night time the visual detection is basically cut in half. I have gotten as close as 2000 yards surfaced without detection at night. I probably could have gotten closer. It is a crap shoot.

Negative. my last encounter saw me being fired upon around 6000 meters away at night surfaced by a Kuma light cruiser when trying to chase and intercept her. second try failed again so now give up.
