It was a nice sunny June day with a few puffy clouds and light seas. Not even 24 hrs from start of Patrol from Vigo. Guaranteed good weather to sink some Frenchies with the deck gun, right?
Wrong!
After sound check we surfaced to intercept one large and a small freighter. We dove the moment we saw the ships and moved into position. I watched the ship approach, this was a good beginning. Ordered surface and lowered periscope.
One minute later, on the bridge, the sky was still scattered puffy clouds but raining hard. Ships nowhere in sight. Game would not let me man the deck gun
by the time my face got red with anger, we were down to our famous 200 meters visibility, thick overcast and heavy seas.
