As a general rule on those realism settings when a destroyer is sighted or warship detected you want to slow to either ahead slow or all stop, rig for silent running by pressing the "Z" key and wait for the destroyer to leave the area. go deeper if possible.
just out of curiosity - what did you do when the destroyer was detected?
sounds like your situation should have been survivable - especially in stock.
Loading a save would not be considered "cheap" as you put it, especially if you are still in the stages of learning to play the game really well.

I never got the "We've been detected sir" message. I went pretty far into the bay by the Filrth place, but I did not go THAT far into it. My watchmen up top sighted two ships...one was a V&W Destroyer and another was a fishing boat. I let the fishing boat alone and dropped to 10 meters depth. I had my sonarman track the V&W. Since it was the middle of the night, I went ahead and surfaced again to try and outrun it. Apparently, this was probably my un-doing as it saw me from afar with its light. I dove again to 25m only to hit the bottom kind of hard at 20m. I of course was running silent at this time and I just sayed there on the bottom not accelerating at all. I saw the ship's bow run right above my ship and he dropped a perfect line of depth charges...two direct hits on either side. I watched my ship literally flail in the water like a dead-fish. I tried to secure from running silent and start repairs, but nothing was doing. I ordered blow-ballasts, and the front or back end of my ship began to rise, but the other end remained at the bottom, too heavy due to flooding to rise up. I am sure the crew inside was realing every which way as I tried to accelerate out in some sort of last ditch effort to save the lives of my crew. It was to no avail...and the end came swiftly.
