Message from Kplt. J.S. Balz
13 May 1941
Prepare a grandiose welcome and festivities. U-53 commanded by the Kriegsmarine's greatest Kaleun will enter port at 0900 hours. Flying the pennants for 107,000 BRT. sunk.
Weather during our patrol has been fog and rain, rain and fog, heavy seas with rain and fog. Fog and rain with light seas. Trying to find a tanker in the fog and rain, we collided with the bugger. No damage to boat. Despite the obstacles imposed by nature, I was able to brilliantly perform my duty.
I now want a IXC boat, which has better acoustics for my choir. Our latest song is The fog and rain hoochie woochie.
Modestly yours,
Kptlt. Johan Sebastian Balz (The Magnificent)
