You're absolutrely correct!
My remark was concerning 12 kts of current, which is not frequent and can be caused onlt by tidal differences.
To add to your comments, there is also a deep underwater current of about 1-3 knots flowing out of the med into the Atlantic. It was discovered by U Boats.
