Yes it was specifically done to duplicate the conditions including the type of rifle and scope that was used. They also simulated shooting from the grassy knoll but that angle was nearly 90 degrees and a much harder target to hit than Oswalds vantage point which had the limo traveling almost directly away from him. I saw that one tried 4 times and they only managed to get a hit once.

I agree it was likely done to shut him up which is why I think there is some merit to the idea that somebody put Oswald up to it. The Russians are another suspect given that Oswald had defected to them just a few years earlier.
