I heard of this happening but was hoping that was not the case. I am playing a single mission which is short, but I like to save regardless. Often it does not affect my save game, but in this case, it must be the reason as I started with all mods disabled via JSGME, so I doubt there was a mod conflict. Quite the terrible bug to leave in the game unpatched but no use crying over a bug that is over ten years old.
Unfortunately, there is no way to save on that particular mission without being submerged or near a large group of ships.
