You may have been using Windows Vista, but maybe even just XP. Things have changed a bit since then with Windows. Vista was the first version with User Access Control (UAC), and "protection" for certain folders, such as "Windows" and all files and folders below it, but also the "Program Files" folders. As such, if you have Silent Hunter installed in the "default..." C:\Program Files (x86)\ Ubisoft\" folder, you will run into issues with mods that will be activated, which Windows will then turn around and restore some of the original files, resulting in a partially activated mod, and a messed-up game. If you have a disk version of the game, you can just grab the Ubisoft folder, and drag it to the C:\ root, so that you have "C:\Ubisoft \Silent Hunter..."
