Pentagon: The battle of the bathrooms
The Pentagon has twice the expected number of restrooms. The reason is that when it was built, Virginia still had segregation laws mandating separate restrooms for Whites and "Coloreds". The problem is that FDR signed EO 8802 in June 1941 eliminating discrimination in the Executive Branch.
What to do, what to do? The building, while under construction was governed under Virginia labour laws.
As the building was built in Virginia, the plans included separate (but equal?) restrooms. However, when the building opened and fell under the Federal control, the bathrooms were opened but never designated as restricted. For a short time, the Pentagon was the only government building in Virginia that had non segregated bathrooms.
