I'm not sure there's such "direct" solution for that. Maybe you can try do lower/disable particle effects but still, you may not be satisfied with the result.
Anyway, ship fires have important effect on damage model in SH5 because they'll cause additional and postponed damage. If you go through FX Update readme documentation carefully, maybe you'll find there what you are looking for...
