In other words, why pick campaigns at all? It looks like the game progresses along with new subs, equipment, and torpedoes regardless.

SH5/OHII campaign organisation slightly differs from previous SH titles. It is consistent of several separated campaigns merged as one in order to...Well, I don't know but it's just like that.
Now, the bottom line is this...The only thing that you have to worry regarding your campaign is that quoted FAQ line and sinking of juicy targets anywhere you like...Nothing more and nothing less...
Patrol grids and secondary missions will give you few crew promotional points but they are mostly just cool guidelines, nothing more...
