As far as the creaks and groans are concerned, I don't know how much you can infer about a Gato from a modern boat. The only evidence I know of is negative: Hull noise is hardly ever mentioned in the contemporary accounts. I seem to recall a comment in Dick O'Kane's account of taking Tang to way below proof depth in a test dive, but that was an exceptional situation. Since other sounds (and smells!) are covered at length in the first-person accounts, we can speculate that there wasn't a lot of creaking, unlike the sound track in SH345.

Does anyone have any better information on this subject? If the creaking is all just some game designer's skull noise, it would be easy to tone it down or eliminate it entirely.

Just some feedback...

A submarines most important ability is to remain quiet. If your hull creaks and groans not only will the people inside the sub hear it but the people listening will hear it to.

Once the hull adjusts to the sea pressure and flexes accordingly the creaking stops...... until sea pressure changes IE increasing and decreasing in depth..

A submarine really does not make many noises as the hull is designed to flex with sea pressure. Having an educated guess id say this really would apply for all subs.

Although the possibility of an older boat being noisier is likley considering the change in design in sound dampening structural components. Nothing on modern submarines is directly attached to the hull. It all floats on huge fixtures with integrated rubber sound insulators.

That was the major advancement with boats after WW2.

The only thing I can say for sure is that after the ships reaches a stable depth, the hull creaks should stop.

The creaks are pure hollywood
