There's a great exhibition on at the Australian War Memorial right now, called 'ANZAC voices'. It's full of Audtralian documents from WWI, war trophies taken from German POWs, and great paintings (my favourite of which was done by a German NCO). There's another painting there as well, done by Murray Kirkland, my uncle. If you're interested in the personal side of war, I'd suggest that you check this exhibition out
