A lawyer's job is to uphold the right's of citizens. The criminal defense attorney defends citizens from being fined, imprisoned, and in some cases murdered(executed) by the government. The civil attorney protects your rights in many ways, from making sure if you are injured etc due to someone's negligence etc you have a way to minimize the damage. They protect you from baseless slander. Some lawyers are scumbags sure, good and bad in both professions but in general, removing the people from and just talking about which is a more noble profession? Lawyer wins hands down. There is a reason many of the founders were lawyers.

I agree with Tarjak on this one on one hand you compare a good lawyer to a good cop.then you sit and say how horrible must cops are and how great most lawyers must be.
I have great confidence if a poll where taken and the question what profession do you most dislike lawyer would be at the top and law enforcement would be far from the top.
I am fully aware of what lawyers do and the different kinds of law.Interesting that you completely ignored an entire facet of law.
The founding fathers that where lawyers would be very disgusted if they saw how the current legal system works.
Also only 25 of the 56 signers of the Deceleration of Independence where lawyers and of the 55 framers of the Constitution 32 where lawyers so there was no massive majority of lawyers as you imply using the term
many.(a large number of)
Jefferson one of your most admired was only a lawyer for five years.
