And more than one u-boatman said similar bad things about Buchheim's book, so he really didn't have that high of a perch to preach from. Also Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock, the real 'Alte' of U-96 and Hans-Joachim Krug, 1WO of U-219, served as technical advisors on the movie.
Yes, the movie takes certain liberties. So does the book. The movie in it's full 293 minutes can be hard to sit through. The book can be hard to read. Both are worth it. I just wish the book's two sequels were available in English.
