Reminds me of an old tale of a US boat which was observing a Russian exercise, it was making a regular quick periscope check when the XO noticed the sea had suddenly become quite calm and flat. He angled the scope up just in time to see an ASW helo lowering its dipping sonar on him.
I believe the quote from the CO after that was:
"Gentlemen, in light of this mornings events I am inclined to remind you that we are supposed to be observing their anti-submarine exercises, not participating in it."
