I had read in January, I think, there was a new patch which has specific support for improved AI. I were in no mood for more experiments and scanned for feedback on that, but found none. So I waited until early this week to try it myself, reinstalling CO and attaching the new software kit.
Then I tried some single player missions with AI set to profi and options tuned up.
Wowh, I was positively surprised, compared to my last attempt over one year ago. The enemy actually does react to my actions now, even aggressively engages on his own and does flankings. Also, my own squads showed to be more obedient and follow my commands for formations, holding positions and such, which also was a grande malaise one year ago and made me deinstalling the game. I occassionally stumbled into the odd things, for example the enemy soldier I almost stood upon and him acting ia if I were not there, and I do not know what I should make of the fact that enemies now seem to lay down aimed fire on me with no unobstructed LOS (gras, bushes), so I could not see him and thus he should not see me, but still firing at me
precisely.
Anyhow, I must say that all in all the game, from an infantry point of view, now is a much more enjoyable experience than it was on my first run with it one year ago. Nice that the latest patch seems to have had such an immense impact on it.
The benchmarking option in the mission menu gave me a result of average 43 frames, and throughout the week it all was fluid and well playable. Only when using binoculars, I sometimes suffer from a punishing drop in frames, estimated to reach values in the one digit range. Is there a cure for that?
I also like the way the have improved the quick mission generator. what is possible there, perfectly matches my desires for what I want to play: missions from 30 minutes - 2 hours, with just a few enemies, or three dozens involved. You launch, make some clicks, and have a quick 1 hour of nice mission play.
Got the BW mod and two addons needed for running that. Works nice, just an occasional error regarding I think a missing sound file for the MG3 on vehicles. I do not run those vehciles anyway, so... Okay, let's not be picky.
Ah, vehicles. As is tradition in this series, they are terrible, slightly improved over the last game versions, but still: terrible. But I do not complain, since I do not play this game to ride in vehicles, but to play from a infantryman's perspective exclusively.
It is more difficult to not get hit and killed, than it was in ArmA or Flashpoint, and maybe the mentioned LOS thing is exaggerated or even erratic, however - it poses a challenge and that makes it nice. No longer mowing down hordes and hordes, with the still living guys just standing by, watching.
