One note: Acc. to BBC 'Discovery channel' program modern SNCS (such as 'Kentucky') are to go to periscope depth to have annual radio-connection with the base, or even to surface due to the climatic conditions (when the magnetic, electrical fields in atmosphere are active etc.) for that purpose.
