I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't already seen it happen, amongst other things. German Shepherds (or Alsatian Shepherds for you British bastards who still think WW1 is going on

) are my favourite breed, and I've seen them escape from all manner of tethers and enclosures.

And no, I didn't train her that well. She's very head strong and we failed to break that from her early. Our fault.

Well, it's never too late to start training. German Shepherds are remarkably aptly-named in that, like Germans, they respond well to discipline, and like Shepherds, they exceed at guarding a specific target in a defined area. Remember that while training.
Not that I'm a dog whisperer or anything, but all dogs have a "pack" mentality. The key to training them correctly is making them realize that you are the leader of the "pack" and you are always the leader, even when you're away. The headstrong nature you mentioned is actually what makes German Shepherds so good for training in virtually any task, as they have an almost wolf-like adherence to the pack system. People say they are "smart", but in truth they are no smarter than any other dog. They are just easier to train if you keep the above in mind. Your problem, if I may venture a guess, is that she thinks she is the "pack leader" when you are away, or even the runner-up when you are around.
In the interests of not derailing this thread further, I'll say no more save that if you would like some helpful free tips on quickly training your Shepherd, I'll be happy to provide a few via PM.

And I normally don't lock my car door at home. Haven't for 20 years. I just don't. But why somebody would stick it in the car door instead of the mailbox 15 feet away is beyond me.

Likewise, it is beyond me. One is liable to get shot for randomly or systematically opening other people's car doors in my area, but then again, I'm in Texas.
