And yes, to be fair, I would immediately return to port, since I'm low on diesel and out of torps. It's so frustrating that I bagged so much tonnage only to be marooned in the middle of the Japanese sea. I evaded four very determined destroyers and now I simply can't turn to head to Midway, lol.

Did it work? You see, everytime I've been too badly damaged to make it to port, I've just deleted the file and started over. Since I've become accustomed to being alive though (yes, I died a lot before), I've been having fun with the Mission Editor and the data files too. I'm like you actually, I've given my subs names that weren't used (as far as I know) USS Mako is my current one. Anyway, the damage stats are saved in one of those cfg files. I've never actually edited them to see if it would work, so that's why I asked. I'll probably get a submarine damaged on purpose when I get home, so that I can try it.
Any luck at all though?
