Doenitz frowned as he laid out several messages on his desk. "How come you didnīt recall U-52, when it reported heavy damage?"
Capt. Rollwitz, his adjutant sighed. "We tried, Balz replied it would not be heroic to return with all torpedoes on board."
"The bastard keeps breaking my boats. It took two months to repair U-52 after his last patrol."
"Now, he canīt dive below one hundred meters," Rollwitz said.
"His next command will be the garbage scow Wili Duck."
"That would look bad, Herr Admiral."
"Why, why, why?"
Rollwitz slid a message across the desk. "Intercepted, in the clear from the merchant Brick Castle. Second U-boat attack today.
Revenge received two torpedoes and sunk."
"What that has to do with Balz?"
"U-52 is the only boat in the area."
"I see. I wish someone else would have done the job."
"This message," Rollwitz slid another flimsy, "somehow was forwarded to the Supply section. An officer by the name of Bernard wants to know the size of your feet."
