Same for trainmen and engineers in the US. I haven't worked regularly at BNSF Railways Inc. for a year and a half now. No freight, no money, no crews needed. They've closed down entire yards and begun using them to store unused rolling stock.
Our major railroads have begun instituting retention boards and unnecessary callbacks in an attempt to stem the tide of employees who are quitting while furloughed. I'm supposed to be back at work within a week or so. Hopefully, NZs railroads will adopt similar measures, assuming they haven't already.
