Hit the numpad "Del" key (right next to the zero) to hide the dials and menu bar. If you have a laptop without a real or virtual numpad, you can either plug in an external usb keyboard (5$ on craigslist), or temporarily change to a higher screen resolution so the slots aren't blocked. (Changing res requires a game restart.)
However, I believe you can control the AA gun manually without any seamen in the slots without ill effects. You're probably better off doing this anyway since your crew are lousy shots.
