In fact on one occasion distant meant 1000 miles west!!

If you research you will find many examples of heavy units travelling within the confines of the merchant ranks. This action was performed mainly during daylight hours because of the relatively short range of AA weaponry.
During the evening the heavy units were deemed more vulnerable to U-boat attack (the preferred conditions of a Kaleun) and therefore left the close confines of the convoy whilst allowing more leeway in manouvreability.
