The Persians were extremely advanced. They are part of the birth of civilization, the greeks took on from where they left. They also had a ridiculously gigantic amount of philosophers. And then came Islam, twice.
Most likely, if Persia had never fallen to Islam, which would've required also for other people around to resist assimilation, it would've rivalled Europe or even lead the way to civilization. We'd belong to the "Persian civilization", not "Western". Europe would have to play catch-up with them, since they'd be so far ahead because of all the years of advantage.
However, many contemporary and modern scholars choose to ignore this reality and pretend they were all primitive people from a dark and ugly past and that all modern advances are the result of distancing ourselves from our origins, that it's necessary to forget our history, to un-learn to learn, to deconstruct to construct. Otherwise, you wouldn't listen to their speech of building a "new world", you wouldn't accept when a politican says the best person to take care of children are not their parents, but the state.
