Enemy submarines

Any enemy submarines out there? Havent seen any on about 20 patroles so they can't be common.

STEED 03-11-06 03:43 PM

No :arrgh!:

Slemtiger 03-11-06 04:17 PM

Maybe in sh4 then :) *hint, hint*

STEED 03-11-06 05:05 PM

Can not see it shame.

Slemtiger 03-12-06 10:22 AM

What about friendly submarines? Is it possible to see those pop when attacking convoys maybe, or in a random patrole?

Torplexed 03-12-06 10:29 AM

No. No wolfpacks sad to say. One of this sims major oversights. :(

Slemtiger 03-12-06 10:36 AM

LOL, so we command the only submarine in wwii :p

Little ironic, the game was made because the submarines played such a huge role in the war, and in the game itself they did not include other submarines then your own :damn:

Torplexed 03-12-06 10:39 AM

Yup. Very ironic. Silent Hunter 2 made the same mistake as well. There may be some mods that include friendly submarines in harbour traffic. But that's probably it.

Einsamer Wolf 03-12-06 10:39 AM

Someone suggested wolfpacks may be included in an expansion pack. Did anything ever come of this?

So how is multiplayer? Do every player get one submarine each and play together?

I belive the new X1 :stare: mediterranien expansion has a British T-class sub moddelled but, it wont shoot torpeedos or submerge  as there is no Ai in the game to allow for this.

Bah! T class subs werent even used very much in the med, they were too big! they served more effectivly in the pacific against the japanese.

they Should have moddled a U or V class sub. Even the S-class would have been cool.

I gotta agree though, the lack of AI subs on both sides, is a glaring oversight for SH3! I hate being the only submarine in ther ocean, it only make things less interesting, some people think sub to sub encounters were rare in WW2, and just pretend its more realistic not to have other submarines about  personally I think these people are well..... pretty stupid..... no offence

(The dev team used a similar excuse as to why no AI subs made it in to SH3, when in fact, they probably just didnt have time to code effective sub AI)

The fact is, sub to sub encounters were not THAT rare at all in ww2, look at my sig, that just Uboat casualties from british submarines alone! imagine how many more sub on sub sinkings took place between other nations! then bear in mind that there must have been many more encounters that were not fatal for either vessel.
There was even one instance in WW2 of a sub torpedoing and sinking another while both were submerged! (the first and last time this has happened in the whole of naval history in fact)

Its not like a Uboat commander bumped in to an enermy submarine and said, "oh we better leave it guys, as we,re not supposed to sink other submarines... just floating things.... its the rules you see"

"During WWII, 21 Uboats were sunk by Allied submarines, 13 of those by the British alone."

Yeah, it would have been a very nice fight. Sub vs sub. Catfight. :o

The only problem being that, like air combat, most of the kills were made on victims who never saw their attackers.

"Okay, I'm sailing out of Brest when I suddenly die. The screen says 'Killed by British Submarine'".

Boy, that sounds fun.

I just bought a book "Duel of Submarines" (U-Boote im Duell) which covers that topic for WW1 and WW2.
Many times the victim saw the torpedo wakes, there were a lot more unsuccessful attacks than kills.
Keep in mind the british didnt have electric torpedoes, so a good lookout could spot the torpedoes.

Good points, and don't get me wrong-I loved encountering enemy subs in SHI. I just don't want to get TOO real.
