New Zealand Navy looses ship
Hydrographic survey and dive support ship HMNZS Manawanui struck the reef she was surveying and has caused the ship to list heavily and catch fire.
All 75 crew onboard have been rescued There are unconfirmed reports that the ship lost power prior to grounding. The ship used to be a North Sea oil and gas support ship called Edda Fonn, it was purchased for $103 million in 2018 and converted in 2019. https://gcaptain.com/hmnzs-manawanui...-zealand-navy/ https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-p...ts-2024-10-05/ https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/...fire-and-sinks |

To this, I would submit a paraphrased reply to a similar sort of criticism leveled at lesbians that was given by a gay female acquaintance of mine: "And how many ships have been lost by straight, male captains?"... The best part of the story is no one was lost or seriously injured; the report that there was a possible power loss indicates the accident was most likely the primary cause of incident; if you can't control the ship, you can't avoid the reef, no matter who you are...; credit should be given to the captain for seeing to the safety of her crew... <O> |
If this were the US Navy it would be the end of the Captains career, male or female. They take a dim view of Captains sinking their own boats accidentally or on purpose.
