Rammed by Destroyer
Hey All,
Patrol 2 Open Horizons 2. I was ordered to Scapa Flow, a mission I'd been looking forward to. 22nd Oct, we slipped into an inllet in Scapa Flow to recharge and conduct some repairs after being depth charged while passing through the southern entrance into Scapa Flow. Next 2 days had huge seas, so we stayed where we were surfaced decks awash, and waited for the seas to calm. Finally 2 days later, the seas calmed, but a heavy fog descended, and didn't clear for 12 hours. 25th Oct, 1730 hrs, we slipped through the nets into Scape Flow. 25th Oct 1941 hrs, I had been plotting a solution to a Cimmaron class tanker just offshore on the northern side, and had just fired off two torpedoes in it's direction. The solution was good, and we were looking forward to our first kill for this patrol. Just then, sonar yelled Destroyer bearing down on us at bearing 332 deg. I spun the scope to see a Destroyer steaming at us at full spead less than 50m away. I immediately ordered dive to 20m, since we only had 25m of water under us. Before we could sink 1m, the Destroyer rammed us square on the conning tower. The chief reported heavy flooding, and was put to doing repairs. Checking the damage report, we'd lost Main Pump, and Hull Integrity was down to 54%, and two crewmen badly hurt. While the crew underwent repairs, I flew up the ladder to the scope, raised it and spun around to spot a burning Destroyer still at flank speed just off out rear quarter. With vengence in mind, I quickly plotted a solution with the only acoustic fish in the stern, and fired it. I usually don't like these, as they tend to bite you in the arse. Fortunately, the Destroyer was making so much noise, it aquired it's target and hit it square in the stern much to the cheers of the crew. With the destroyer dealt with, I lowered scope, and checked with the chief. He reported flooding was out of control, so I ordered the crew to surface. With the main pump gone, and in shallow waters, it was clear the mission was scrubbed, so we set sail for the southern entrance to Scapa Flow decks awash, hoping no one else would spot us as we retreated. Five minutes later, the Cimmaron tanker blew up behind us to more cheers from the crew (ty Stormy :) ). Sonar reported two quiet contacts on bearing 289 & 303. Looking, we spotted two Destroyers at rest approx 5000m out from us. The first wasn't much of a threat as I doubted they'd detect us at that range, but the first was a real threat. So I plotted a solution, and sent a fish on it's way. It found home a short while later and hit it in the right back quarter. When it blew, I realised the second needed to removed also, as it could awake with the destruction of the first. With no other contacts, and with it at long range, I decided to send 3 fish it's way hoping for one hit. 10m later, all 3 hit. Passing through the entrance to Scapa Flow, we spotted a patrol boat less than 2000m out, and this was a real threat, as they can travel very high speed of course. We fired two torps at it, and one hit. Amazingly it exploded and flew into the air, landed and sank. More escorts were detected in the submerged passage into the North Sea, but we were not detected. We made it back to Bremen for repairs, still with heavy flooding in the Command area. Patrol Ended with 35,000 tons, way below my usual but with main pump gone, and hull badly damaged, continuing the patrol was a risky venture. I had no idea in SH5 or in Open Horizons we could be rammed. :) I actually found it thrilling. lol Ty Modders, especially Stormy for his DBS mod. :) |
Why do you have an acoustic torpedo in the Scapa raid? These only came into play in 1943?
Other than that, it was interesting, I have been rammed many times, unarmed merchants tend to do it more though. |
Nice post Venus:sunny:

I have went through Scapa plenty of times but I have never seen a single net. I have seen them in other places but as yet none at Scapa Flow.
As for being rammed ... yep been there a few times. Generic Mod Enabler - v2.6.0.157 RSRDC_SH15_V550 RSRDC_V5xx_Patch1 OpsMonsun_V705 OMv705_to_V720 OMv720_Patch5 OMEGU_v300 OM_Med_Env OM_Harder_Escort_L1 Popular German Music From The 30´s UBM Missions |

I hope I didn't sound accusatory or anything, certainly didn't intend to come across in that way. One thing I should probably mention is that upon starting a new campaign I save + reload in the bunker in order to be able to upgrade my sub - not sure if this might be resulting in it? (Because I'm new to playing I'm unsure if you can still access the upgrades - albeit not prior to the first mission - without doing this, I'd imagine so?). I'll check this later. The only other thing I'm using is the TDW patcher and while that has a number of settings pertaining to torpedos I don't imagine any of them would cause this alteration. |
An acoustic torpedo in 1939 sounds pretty fishy to me. The first acoustic I remember obtaining was no later than November of 42' and that was the falk.

Nice report Venus, omitting the little immersion breaker of acoustic torpedoes in '39, I enjoyed it to the end
