Is SH5 as free as SH3 yet?

What I mean by the title is: is Sh5 as dynamic, engrossing, and complicated with extravagance as SH3 yet? You can play the whole war, a slew of different u-boats, and so much more in SH3.

I'm a huge fan of SH3, but I'm ready to take the leap into SH5 for better looks. I know SH3's folder structure and file structure better than I do my own personal life, so I am no stranger. I have hundreds and hundreds of mods incorporated into SH3, without the use of JSGME.

What I like is realism, "historicalism" and good looks (in that order) in my mods.

So what mods should I use for SH5? Does SH5 have Type II's via mods?

What u-boats have been added via mods? Where are the ship model databases?

It's a big moment for me, because I've spent years modifying my Sh3 folder. Quite emotional.

Thank you in advance.

Other than graphics, I think silent hunter 5 is a huge step down from 3. I'm sure many others will agree on here.

I only play 5 because I can't get used to the SH3 controls (having started with 5).

Use the OHII mod with SH5. To me the graphics are so much better, it's more engrossing, and yes mor complicated. It takes a bit getting used to SH5 but for some reason it just pulls you in and gets you hooked on it. But you also need a higher end computer inorder to play it without it crashing on you. Installation will check to see if your computer can handle it.

Know that you will select missions and not be sent to Grid areas like in SH3. That's the part that takes getting used to. You will need to get tonnage values[not shown to you with OHII] to complete each section of a Campaign with times constraints. If you don't use OHII, then you will see what the required mission tonnage is. With stock SH5 it's high but can be reduced by using the Reduced Mission Tonnage mod. And you need mods to make SH5 work as it should. No mods mean you play a broken SH5... and that's not fun at all.

Currently, this is not a big problem SH5.
In the near future you will be able to choose. Or perform "Missions" or patrol "Square".

Thank you for the responses. Not as encouraging or hopeful as I would have hoped.

Does SH5 have the possibility of becoming as engrossing as SH3, in time?

Sailor Steve 01-21-13 04:18 PM

SH5 still has the possibility of becoming the best of all of them. It is taking longer than expected, though.

I think everything will be. We must hope.
For example TDW. Only now figured out "intelligence aircraft." There is confidence that it will be so with the rest.

This is a simple task for the campaign where the objective patrol area (big circle) can be switched for squares and named grids.
Also - mission (orange icons) can be switched for smaller grids

Yes, the only problem I see is that convoy reports by B.d.U. would remain in lat/long format :hmmm:

As long as it appears on the map it shouldn't be a problem. On the other hand it would be nice if the whole system could be lifted from SH4.

Yes I see, but are they always shown on the map?

Usually I missed those reports, and when I read them, they were long been removed :O:

Indeed, converting those reports in MQK format would be the best option, supposed that it is going to be possible...
