Burning torpedo boats?

Hey guys,
first post here although I have enjoyed the mods and tips of this forum for quite some time after buying SH5 without knowing about the DRM and other various problems. With your help the game was at least tolerable and since I've heard that with Open Horizons and assorted mods it can become great I had to try it out again. I've installed Trevally's modlist for beginners (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=190656) with some of the additional graphic bits and automation scripts and it seems to work fine.

However during the mission to sneak into Scapa Flow and destroy a capital ship I noticed two odd things. I fired a long range shot at a tiny merchant ship (fishing boat i think) coming out of the harbour as a distraction. This stirred up the enemy destroyers and a little later while waiting for sundown I saw several fires burning in the distance. I checked it out with the external camera, two destroyers had crashed into each other and at completely different locations two torpedo boats were burning for no apparent reason. The destroyers are kind of strange and made me question if IRAI is working properly but I have no idea if it can even prevent stuff like that from happening. The torpedo boats are what baffles me, any idea for a cause of their spontaneous combustion? :hmmm:

if you are using the damage from fire mod i think it also adds damage from ship collisions so if the boats ran into each other that could be it.

we really need to know what mods you are using to help with things like this

The complete list is the balanced mod list from the thread I linked:
MightyFine Crew Mod
Dynamic Environment
SH5 Tarnmatte Anechoic Coating (SH5 Type-VIIC)
Equipment and Upgrades by TheBeast
FX Update
IRAI
German U-Boat Crew Language Pack
Stormy`s DBSM collection SH5
Multiple UIs for SH5 with TDC and Automation
Depth_Keeping_Problem_HB_2_0_0_TheDarkWraith
Depth charge water disturbances
Open Horizons II

and I added these from the second list:
sobers best ever fog V4 SH5
Small_trees_SH5_V1
TDW FX Fix for Sobers chimney smoke
EQuaTool 01.01 by AvM
Trevally Automated Scripts v0.6
SH5Lifeboats_by_Rongel_TDW_stoianm_v2.1

And I don't think that both torpedo boats collided with something since they were at completely different locations. It's also not that big a deal, I'm just wondering if it's one of the mods causing it or if this happens in the normal game as well. ;)

Hi UmmonTL,

You are the second person to report this in scapa - there may be an error in that mission set by OHII:hmmm:

When I have some time, I will check it out. Thanks for the bug report:up:

It's not only in Scapa, Trevally..

It can happen anywhere.. When destroyers deckguns fired at submerged contact, sometimes hits torpedoboats..
It's IRAI

I'm also having lots of collisions from surface ships I attacked two escorted battleship the DD's were okay hunting me but the second battleship just rammed everything in its path and did more damage than I, another similar patrol joined the hunt and the carnage was incredible. The DD's tried getting out of the way just to ram another or to fail and get rammed. I understand the ships have bad collision detection but whatever is happening its wrong. I am using IRAI and will test the next patrol with it removed, but only noticed this since IRAI.

My understanding of it is that the collision bug is a stock problem, not something caused by IRAI. TDW will no doubt be along eventually to confirm, but I'm pretty sure there's nothing that can be done about it - from what I remember, collision routines are hard-coded.

What Trevally can do?
This is old-known bug since SH3 times. SH5 bases on this same SH3's engine...

Probably an environmental mod. Larger waves when interacting with the damage zones on certain ships. Usually effects smaller ships like torpedo boats first. Best way to test this is enter a single mission with torpedo boats and observe them. If they spontaneiously combust anywhere between 10 and 30 minutes in game time, its an environmental mod. Using larger numbers with the wave attuenation settings in the sim.cfg is usually the cause.

In SH3, the engine puts/spawns the vessels into the water from the height of few tenth of meters (15 m or so). It looks more like it drops them from this height. Threfore, small vessels like PT-boats get often damaged at the contact with water. I have witnessed that myself after setting the spawning point of PT-boats close to the location of the player U-boat. I would guess this bug was passed over to the SH5 engine.
