Renown question

Ahoy mates can anyone tell me how your crew[cpo's seamen and officers] gain renown. thanks :arrgh!:

They don't (although their value is increased by promotion).

You gain Renown.
Your crew gains Experience.

Renown is rewarded for destroying enemy units and your crews experience, strength and stamina grows with the number of patrols they take part in.
