Just need to set the Initial speed and direction of the ship via the editor, what is most important is that the ship is set to appear within the correct time period of the mission.
With regards to the waypoints you can click on each and adjust speed changes for ship at each waypoint, the last waypoint you need to set Ship disappears at last waypoint to False if its going to be in visually range of your boat in mission, you can also get it to loop back to another waypoint here also.
Another critical point is that you must place ships outside of the visual range your boat to be sure that they spawn at mission start.

well thats where the problem is. I want to have an armed trawler move from in front of the pens out of the harbour to simulate an escort guiding you out of the port. But the start time of the start of campaings are random and so are the times you leave port in the campaing itself.

Script them to run a loop.
Then wait for it to come to the start point before you leave.

Yes but this loses immersion.

I highly doubt a Guide Ship was on the spot at every instance.
In GWX for SH3, sometimes I had to wait, sometimes it was right there.
