A convey with zero protection?

I encountered a convey that after shadowing it, I confirmed it had no escorts, which was fine since early in the war that was common at half the trip. What was weird is that none of the ships had guns on them and after using my torpedoes, i just surfaced and started to shoot them with my Flak.

I ended up sinking 11 ships with 53000 tons.

Now my question is....Is this realistic/historical?? Shouldn't the ships in the convey at least disperse each on a different direction, or thats not possible with the game engine?

I was using GWX 3.0, with some various small mods.

Early in the war some ships formed convoys (of a sort) because they tthought it was safer to be in numbers.

The game engine won't allow ships to scatter....simply commence zig zagging.

Once had a similar thing happen to me, no guns, no escorts, and it wasn't even like a small convoy of 3-4 ships, this was a full sized convoy of about 20 ships or more.

Of course by the time I was done with it, it was a full sized shooting gallery.:arrgh!:

Ah, the early years are the best.

Sometimes no escorts, sometimes just a token escort that is easily dealt with if you can sneak up on the herd after dark.

I hit a convoy out of Freetown once that was chock full of big cargo ships and ore carriers with one sad lonely Black Swan leading the pack. There were a couple of what must have been fairly slow armed merchies or maybe a trawler or something that tried to fire on me when I first surfaced... so I just parked on the opposite of the convoy and they had to fire over their own ships to try and hit me. I think they actually helped me sink a couple. :yeah:

Ahh, I love it when something like this happens

Still, play a type ii sub if you like to scream at your computer, 4/5 of your torps are duds, and you have no deck gun

Very early war, they were only escorted from 300 miles west of Ireland.

No escorts across the middle of "The Pond".
BUT, the uboats weren't attacking out any farther than that either.

All that changed rather rapidly over time.

Do they come in a "sad, lonely" flavor? Not where I shop!

Puts a capital C in challenge...

Or is that F in frustration? :hmmm:

To be fair she was only sad and lonely for a very, very short time... right there in between when the torpedo detonated and the ship sank. :arrgh!:

I have this image in my head of the Blach Swan movie poster, but instead of Natalie Portman it has a destroyer. :hmmm: Too bad I suck in photoshop

haha :)

No, it's not realistic. Real life convoys would have dispersed or at least tried to ram.

But in early years I have plundered many a convoy, expending all my torpedoes and deck gun ammo.

Perhaps 3 or 4 times I have wiped out entire convoys single-handedly. :)

If you can get a Type IX early enough you can really cause some damage.

Recently returned to SH3 after nearly 6 years of "shore duty".

While playing vanilla SH3 toward the end of a patrol, got word of a convoy headed my way.

2 escorts, front and back. Feeling a bit rusty, I decided to make my attack run on the first 2 merchants on the right side of the convoy and evade. Both hit, both sunk.

Only 2 fish left, 1 front, 1 aft.

Just one hour after resuming patrol, Sonar reports numerous merchants seemingly following the first convoy's track.

No warships? Confirmed, no warships.

Commenced my surface attack run at 0230, C2 sunk using both fish and my deck gunner had a field day sinking 4 ships and setting another on fire before expending all ammunition.

Now that I've updated SH3 and loaded GWX gold and SH3 Commander, I've never had two convoys that close together. :wah:
