Prince William to wed
But what struck me as odd is the report on the news this morning. It was clearly a borrowed report from a British agency where Kate Middleton was noted to be a commoner; a term that is not used at all stateside. I know that it is used to donte a person who is not attached to the Royal Family, but the way the reporter said it with a very hard emphais on the 'c', you'd think it was the 15th century and we was describing some peasant wench: 'And so the Prince will marry this commoner next year.'
Not disparaging the royals, but it is not something I was accustomed to hearing and it jumped out at me. |
:hmmm: I guess it's an official term to use to denote someone not of Royal descent. I guess to a nation not used to a class system as much as we are it would be a bit more jarring. Still, either which way good on Harry, he's a decent chap and will make a good King when the time comes, both him and his brother have more of the common touch about them than their elders, I think they inherited that from their mother who is someone that will be dearly missed on the big day.
Once upon a time this would be a big day in the UK with lots of bunting and that around, sadly I suspect that it will be a rather quiet affair. :damn: |

EDIT: Nope. My moderator powers are no good on GT. Ah well, that's what I get for ignorance. |
By the way, the son of the regent is the prince of wale, his brother is the duke of? And the grandchildren of the regent, sons of the prince of wales have what titles?

I think...titles are confusing in our Royal Family. Oh, and don't worry TS, like our good smartass notes, I get the two mixed up all the time, hard to think I'm the same age as Harry... :haha: No offense or anything taken in regards to tone, to be honest I'm as amused by some of the antiquities of the British regal system as most. In fact, sometimes people from other nations take more note of it than most British do, despite the fact that it's plastered all over the media today and probably will be for the next few days (or months in the case of the Daily Mail). Britain is an interesting nation in terms of its monarchical system, and its relation to the public, I often ponder whether things are particularly different in other monarchical nations, whether we put more emphasis on it than they do. :hmmm: My great-grandmother was a devoted royalist, her scrapbook as lots of news cuttings about them, as it was for people of her time, but as the years have gone past, and the odd scandal has rocked them, particularly the families treatment of Diana around the time of the divorce, well, I think public perception has lowered somewhat. This has also been affected by, and I mean no offense here, but first generation immigrants and the conciliatory attitude towards them which has increased greatly since the original 1950s West Indies arrivals (who are probably some of the most patriotic Brits you could find) to those of today who believe that the place of migration should adapt not the immigrant...but that is a discussion which is not for this thread and would probably fold neatly into any discussion in regards to immigration. When you couple that to a growing number of populace who are more interested in reality television than reality itself, then the decline of interest in the monarchy and the political system is shown. :yep: |

One reason IMHO is the fact that due to the freedom of the press everyone is often quite aware of what goes on behind the scenes and add to that the rising levels of social deprevation and the rise in working class expectations it doesn't suprise me people can become a little resentful. I sometimes ponder the following crazy/absurd hypothetical situation: The armed forces are given conflicting orders from both the reigning monarch and the Queens First Minister (Prime Minister).....who would they obey? I know who I would obey. |

Personally, I would support any means of getting rid of our Dutch royal family. And with "any means", I mean *any* means, as long as not too many "commoners" are getting killed. Hell yes, if necessary, I would support an armed overthrowal of the royal family a la Russia 1917, including execution of all of them if they are not prepared to give up their royal status and return the money they stole from the people. |
