Keep your eyes open
In a rough night off the northern coast of Scotland I torpedoed a freighter and lingered on the surface to observe her sink. While I was fixated on the show, a fast torpedo boat closed to about 400 metres off my port side and opened fire on me. I was able to crash dive before any serious damage or crew deaths occurred. Lesson learned: don't get so fixated on the target. If you have to linger, at least submerge.

I did that once. Wanted to stick around for the fireworks, unforutnately a Destroyer was quite interested as well....
Best to leg it the heck out of there asap. |
always have the soundman check for warships after you attack a merchant.
|
I always leave the area once I torpedo a ship, you never know when you'll get attacked.

However, lesson was learned and we shall be more careful, especially considering both Scapa Flow and Loch Ewe are not that far away. I find the Hebridean strait to be a rich hunting ground early in the war. I have never felt brave enough to try it in the latter era of the war. |

This is not so great when you realise that the big fat orange explosion you just witnessed was actually a neutral or a friendly, and you start the 50km dash to freedom before she sinks and you get (dis)credited with renown penalties. :o |
Thanks for the info, Jimbuna. I'll haul off next time and use the external view for the eye candy. And it sure is sweet eye candy, thanks to all the extras in GWX and a few other mods. I have never encountered a game like this that adds so much life to a sim that is five years old or so. I have IL2 but really haven't done anything with it. Once I finish overhauling my desktop with some newly purchased parts I think I will invest some time above the waves.

I don't know how many times I have been deep in English waters, deck gunning merchants when all of a sudden someone spots a destroyer running flank speed to catch me in the act.
