3D Engine trouble

Hi all. I recently bought SH3 cause i hate SH4 and the SH5 DRM is stupid. anyway...i got it all installed and installed Commander and GWX 3 Gold, then when i went to launch the program for the first time this little error message pops up: Cannot initialize 3D Engine.
Any solutions to this would be much appreciated.

Did you try to lauch SH3 before you added anything?

You have to open SH3 at least once without going through Commander in order for Commander to work. Not sure why but I think the game has to create files the first time you load it that Commander needs to access when you run it for the first time.

Anyway I always forget that after a fresh install. I don't think you have to load a mission or start a career, just open the game and let it load one time and then exit. Then open Commander.

If you don't start SH3 at least once,
you have no SH3 folder in your Documents folder.
SH3 Commander looks for that folder doesn't it?
:hmmm:

Are you by any chance running Win7? If so then that's the problem I had. I tracked it down to being a problem with the screen refresh rate. For some reason Win7 interprets what WinXP says is 60Mhz as 59Mhz. To fix it you have to set up a custom screen res with a screen refresh rate of 60.001Mhz You can do this with nVidia control panel.

You may also need to make sure that you let the application control the AA as until I did that, whilst I could get the game to run, all I saw was a black screen with the menu music playing in the background.

Check this thread out for other possibilities: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=162165

EDIT: good to see you got it to work.
