general campaign talk
I'm still a bit confused about the campaign objectives and radio traffic.
My first patrol a S-18 class submarine, the SS-137, takes off from Manila base. Destination Celebes Sea, while reaching it is also the first mission for me. So I did that. Following orders where to sink merchant shipping. After one month on sea SS-137 has sunk 2 japanese Cargo Freighters and 1 japanese small tanker, altogether worth of ~9700 BRT. No torpedoes left, no deck gun ammo left, fuel at ~1/3 of its maximum capacity. But after sending a status report, orders where as always: continue the objectives, quit sending reports for the next 2 hours. Weird people back at headquarters ... I thought of taking her back to Manila base (I judged it still being dockable from the blue Font on the NavMap) but all that was waiting for me there was a single japanese freighter. Again: weird. I never received any radio message about Manila being taken by the Japanese or being left by my friends (It's Jan. 11th '42). I just read http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=111509 this (the thread about how to complete objectives). But why doesn't HQ even acknowledge me having no ammo left and send me back to base ? Why is Manila still blue when only japanese ships anchor there  I'm quite a bit confused, I have to say ^^. I just left Manila again and finally recognized the harbour symbol at another friendly base and sailed there. What would you guys tell me to do: just refuel and rearm to take onto the same mission or start a new one ? Maybe, if I just end this patrol, the game and HQ finally realize that Manila is already taken by Japan :/ And another question: does the RSRD campaign from the mod forums fix any of those issues ? Thanks in advance :) |
Are you running any other mods? I run RFB/RSRDC,and once you get to 2 torpedoes,I believe,HQ will not give you any more orders,so you may either return to base and end patrol,or,as I sometimes do, head to the nearest base and refit, and return to the location of my previous mission, and send another status report to get new orders.

You have some options. You can refit at any other base to get fuel and more Torps and keep going. Generally the gane is scripted to where when you complete a mission and you have only two torps left you will get a message to return to base or patrol an area of your choice. But what is the point with no weapons? Also you need 10K in tonnage to complete an objective.

Thanks for the replies. I got the hunt orders long before I ran out of torpedoes and just wondered why they wouldn't send me some meaningful following orders when I informed them about my zero-ammo status later.
Another question would be, do the campaign events continue even if I stay on patrol (that is, just refuel and rearm) ? I tested ending the patrol and got a video about the submarines are now sent to help evacuating Manila. Or just starting over with RSRD, tough question that is ... :hmmm: |
If you rearm and refuel and go back out, the game continues as before. You could, in theory, spend the whole war on a single patrol, as long as you don't get too damaged.
I never get return-to-base orders, except when reporting a contact Comsubpac doesn't want me to attack. The answer to that is usually "woops, too late." :haha: |

DITTO that statement i agree with the others sometimes the best thing to do is plot a course to the nearest base and select the refit option and then head back out |
I order the crew to install the large drill bit on the deck gun and we continue the offensive. :D
|
I did not see a large drill bit on my last load out... where exactly do you pick one of those up at? <G>

Each succesive campaign layer loads when you return to port depending on the dates. As each layer only has a finite number of targets, if you don't return to port they will not load and you will be all alone. JCC |
