Excessive explosions

Greets, all.

Stock 1.5, wondering if there is a way to turn down the 'Hollywood' explosions: would prefer to watch a vessel slowly struggle to stay afloat after under-keel torpedo shots rather than a cascade of top side explosions. Any tips, info, help would be appreciated.

For realistic sinking I can highly recommend Natural Sinking Mechanics. Mod only changes the way ships sink. AFAIK it only changes IJN ships, either might go squirrely in German campaign or Allied ships may just demonstrate "stock" behaviour.:hmm:

Welcome aboard!

Thanks for the link and the welcome.

I've spent a couple weeks poring over old threads after finding the site; the list of available mods, tweaks, and assorted whatnot have my head spinning :o . Trying to ease into any alterations...

Hey fish food and welcome.

Yes the explosions are a tad 'dramatic' but with some mods it is toned down a bit but still there.

NSM is one both RFB and TMO modify the sinking mechanics, basically making them sink slower and toning down the explosions to some degree but as I said its still there.

Another thing that bugs me is the psychic crew :hmm:

"Shes going down !" Really? wow still looks afloat to me, lets hang around a half hour or so to make sure. "But sir that escort is approaching awfully fast!" Oh I guess your right we already know shes going to sink, dive !

fishfood 08-27-08 12:19 PM

Thanks for the welcome and lol about the crew; thing that makes me want to bring out the plank is 'We have flooding, sir!' every thirty seconds when I have all watches activated (battle stations) and a full repair party working on it :damn:. Wish I could stuff the CE into the leak and tell him to suck on that...

Is there a method whereby I could open a cfg file and manipulate a value for the explosions, sinking rate, etc. rather than installing a full mod? Never really tweaked a game and I am not a computer guy so the mods skeer me  .

No no no dont let modding scare you.

There is a nifty little utility called JSGME or Jones Soft Generic Mod Enabeler that makes it all pretty easy.

But yes of course you could edit the files yourself. To me that seems even more difficult than using JSGME.

Thee is a section of these forums dedicated to Mods and modding. You will be best served by spending some time there reading up and asking questions if you wish.

But again... the modding community is way ahead of you and done a ton of the grunt work already. But if you wish to get involved in the actual modding by all means. Again I direct you to the modding forum.

Good luck

yes its fairly easy to do. download the "silent 3ditor" tool, it is THE main tool for all modding. then instal "JSGME" tool, it is THE mod install and uninstall tool. next, before you mod anything, make a backup copy of your entire unmodded "Data" folder and save it to disk so you can restore corrupted game files. (this is often needed no matter how carefull you are)

the files you are looking for are the files with the "dat" suffix, these are the ones that mainly control animations. if you are talking about making torpedo explosions smaller they are in the data / library folder. inside you will see torpedos files but these are the german ones, the US files are called torpedos_US. if your looking to change the ship explosions they are located somewhere else but be aware when you change something like that it can look great with one ship and totally crappy with another so test many ships to decide the best explosion you like.

as others have said, post in the sh4 mods thread and you will get all the help and instruction you need to do this. feel free to elaborate all you want to but when your ready to ask questions just keep them short and to the point for best results.

Thanks SteamWake and WEBSTER for the tips on JSGME; I've been downloading mods and tools like a fiend but have yet to install any.

Can anyone verify this sequence?

1. Uninstall SH4
2a. Reinstall SH4 directly to C drive
2b. Create backup copy of data folder
3. Install tools (JSGME, silent 3ditor, etc.)
4. Install mods
5. Reboot

Yes its a refreshing change when compared to alot of other game's websites.

Usefull accurate info, very few flame wars, and trolls are discouraged.

Probably the most mature, and informed community I have ever seen.

well i think its got a lot to do with the game. IMO it is favored by more mature minded people and not as much by the kids who whine all day about this or that.

this game requires that you think so the people who play it tend to have AND use their brains to communicate and get along as adults.

its also a result of the team who work hard to make sure this is a place for helping others and treating people with respect. they also do a heck of a job keeping spam out of the forums too.

If you like floaters see my reply to Uses for Deckgun thread...it is on page 3 or 4 I believe...now you talk about a slow sinker...:yep: ..this one took the prize...and I have Hollywood effects...

RickC Sniper 08-28-08 09:11 PM

I think that NSM mod is only for 1.4. It says on that link not to use it with 1.5.
