Sub Upgrades

I was wondering if there was any information available on which sub types could get which upgrades? pretty much asking if its worth trading in my type VIIB for a VIIC or wait for VIIC/41/42 to come out.

Also which boats are best?

ok IID is better than IIA but what is the actual diference in real gameplay between the different type VII and IX boats?

Thanks guys and girls

Main difference between type VII and IX is that the type IX is longrange uboat that
operated near US coast, Caribbean and the far east. It could carry more torpedoes that the type VII, but it had longer dive times and was larger.
That would proove as disadvantage, because if the boat is suprised by aircraft it
just couldn't dive fast enough to avoid being damaged.
Also, because of it's size, it's easier to track her with sonar, and hit her with depth charges or hedgehogs.:dead:

Thanks for the answer but you misunderstood, i meant what are the real differences between the subs in the same class (type VIIB,C,C/41 etc...) not between the actual sub classes.

There aren't big differences between type VIIB and VIIC, except that VIIC was slightly
slower on surface because of it's heavier engines.
As for VIIC variants (41 and 42), they had stronger pressure hull so they could dive deeper (crush depth for 41 was around 250 m, and for 42 around 400 m).
Type VIIC/42 never reached operational level, because all contracts to build them were
cancelled.

Situation is similar with type IX boats (improved range, underwater speed...)

The type VIIC is upgradeable throughout the war.

Similarly, the IX newer models plus the fact they have greater range and torpedo stowage. http://www.psionguild.org/forums/ima...ies/pirate.gif

Thanks for all youre answers.

I did some more looking around and i found this page http://alexbret.perso.cegetel.net/index4875.php

pretty much told me which upgrades were available for which boats at what time etc...

My usual campaign (GWX 2.1) starts in 1939 in type IIA which i keep until i can afford a type VII B or C, then later on in 41/42 i buy a type IX. i like playing that way as in the early missions you do lots of patrols so you end up with a very specialist crew core (one speciality per patrol) to which you add the extra crews when you move from class to class so in my longest campaign i had an elite core which had been with me since the beginning (apart from most of a deck crew which got killed back in 1940) which have i have given most of the promotions and medals.

Since you're playing with GWX you can hit the F1 key & a list of pages will be displayed. One of them is called something like "U-Boat Time & Distance" (can't remember the exact name at the moment). Click on this page & it will give you the maximum depth, range, speed & minimum dive time for each playable U-Boat.

lo moosey

i know you were asking about upgrades of the same class ingame.

but if you do change to a IXb at some point you will love the extra torp loadout BUT....man...she dives like a bloated bail of cork!!!

rarely have i escaped damage from an aircraft with this sea cow!!
but i cant give her up for some reason!!

shes part of me...a good boat....with good men

Yeah, i have tended to wait until radar warning equipment becomes available before swapping for a type IX.

I also love the look of them, the raised bow, the big gun, the extra torps, expansive interior...

Of course by 1942 some later variants have come out that dive a little quicker.

You can also look the details up. They are in the data\Cfg\Basic.cfg file. Equipment is listed at the end of the file. I had a programme somewhere which converted Basic.cfg into a table. I'll see if I can find it.

However, I did find this list for GWX-2.1... (sorry about the formatting!)
