Total Tonnages So Far - Opinions?

Here's a screenshot of the blackboard Top Skippers Scores found in your office at the end of each patrol.. I will update the link to a new photo as new tonnage comes in and total number of patrols changes..

What do ya think?

8 patrols on 100% realism 351,553 total tons.
Most recent mission: Photo Recon Tokyo Harbour (lots of sitting ducks this time)
Patrol result: 17 merchants, 8 warships, 2 zeroes, 2 search planes. (1 carrier, 2crusiers, 2 DD's, 2 subchasers, 1 gunboat)

I think it's way too easy.

Seminole 07-30-08 07:46 AM

Yeah.... it is like fly fishing a stream where you catch a 10 pound brownie on every cast.

After the first couple of days it becomes ho-hum.

It is so easy on full realism I have to wonder just what you could accomplish with 0 realism and one of those mods that gives you "super powers" ? :shifty:

Though I ain't about to find out firsthand...:nope:

I'd say it's time to crank up the difficulty with RSRD and TMO, then kill the harbor raids. However your tonnage isn't in the realm of the real gamers, who are bragging about amassing 100k tons in a single cruise without a refit. I figure 30 - 50k per cruise is darn decent with a halfway realistic setup and coming in under 10k isn't unusual. That's still too easy, but that's SH4 with any set of mods so far.

Quillan 07-30-08 08:19 AM

I sank 100k tons without a refit in SH3 one time, but it was before GWX and I wasn't using manual targeting then. Besides, most of the kills came through the deck gun because I had a more than 2 week period of calm seas. Since I switched to manual targeting and TMO/RSRD, I consider myself to be doing very well if I sink 20k tons in a patrol. I topped 40k tons once, but the biggest chunk of that came when I got advance radio notice of a BB transit, and caught a Kongo on the way home.

Realistic tonnage would be 'boring'.

I can imagine the posts here "I went an entire patrol and all I saw was a fishing boat" :)

Anyhow thats why it is as it is.

Sailor Steve 07-30-08 08:51 AM

Boring for some. I like it when I can be glad I sank something and came home with 8,000 tons.

But then I like cruising the harbors, too.

What happened to all the expensive fancy smancy 'diverters' ?

Oh well at least they can feel good about being green

Sorry to wander off topic.

Realism

If it's too easy then it's not worth playing and quickly gets boring IMHO.
I'm currently using Version 1.4 with TMO and RSRD.
I just got back from a patrol with nada, zip, niente and yes, I was disappointed but at least I know that historically that was certainly not unusual. My patrol before that I managed to find one ship. Sinking it took some time and manoeuvering and was extremely satisfactory!!:smug:
The patrol before that I bagged 3 ships and was ecstatic, LOL.
I don't 'cruise' the harbours as my orders don't usually give me that leeway. Additionally an 'undefended' harbour is hardly realistic and present no challenge.
I've seen some huge numbers in tonnage in SH3 and SH4 which, compared to the famous skippers of the day, are so far off it's laughable.
Whatever turns your wheel, I guess.:-? You get out of it what you put into it.

Harbor cruising in SH4 is a gamey joke, it's so easy. Yawn. Fluckey did it in real life and got a Medal of Honor.

they don't work....very well...

Um, when I said I liked cruising the harbors, I meant looking at the sights while I sailed in and out of port. I've never done a harbor raid, and probably never will.

Orion2012 07-30-08 08:23 PM

I would consider harbor raiding, if it were more realistic and they actually seemed to care.
