Impossible to Destroy Destroyers?

Well I decided to take on a task force.. I was laying hidden, as 3 Destroyers (i belive all were tribal Class) and 3 Southhampton Class (light cruisers?) steamed by me..

I launched 2 torps at the first cruiser, and both hit.. the destoryers closed in as I intented, and as they got close, I launched a torp with the shallowest depth possible....

It went right under the keel, but no hit:damn:.. I used an Impact pistol btw, the magnetic dont seem to work that well on small ships.

ive tried redo-ing this many times, and every time it goes under the ship... so whats the deal here?.. is it impossible to sink them? :dead:

btw, im using GWX2 if it makes a difference.

i have found that a magnetic torpedo at 4 meters depth will eliminate just about any DD on the high seas.

try that next time.

of course if you are using manual targeting things get interesting when one is closing in on you from less than 1500 meters and you have to get a "snap shot" solution together in a matter of seconds.

well manual targeting is WAY too confusing for me :hmm:

ill try the magnetic torpedo, but even at 1 metre it seems to go under the DD.... maybe i let him get too close?

Could be... the torpedo has to travel more than about 300 meters to arm.

Bah, it's not that hard. You might want to try reading some of the advice threads that this forum has on manual targeting, firing, etc. They can come in handy (we've all had to consult them at one point or another). Threads like that are all like the School of Athens: many great minds (in this case hunters) are sharing their knowledge and tips on "how to sink ships".

And right there lies your answer. A torpedo used with impact setting will only exploded after actually hitting the target. If it passes under the keel, well, that's about it.

Now a magnetic setting would have given you the desired result in this situation.

I've had no real problems with smaller ships and the magnetic setting. I've actually blown a fishing boat out of the water with one. And i ''mean out of the water'' , it actually flew up pretty high and fast :rotfl:

Do not use impact! When a DD is heading towards you your AoB is extremely bad for the torp's trigger to get a good hit! So it most surelly will bounce off the hull.
A magnetic does it most of the time

Kaluens,

Not trying to hijack this thread BUT...

I have had successful torpedo impacts at 215 meters.. I know that they need 300 m to arm.

So how does this occurr? :hmm:

That's right, impacts seldom work on a destroyer coming at you, also a torpedo will not arm if a destroyer coming at you is 500 meters or less.

Better using magnetics agaunst escorts because an impact with a magnetic setting will still detonate http://www.psionguild.org/forums/ima...ies/pirate.gif

If the ship is sailing away from you, let's say at 6 knots or faster, it will take longer for the torpedo to reach the target and it needs to cover a longer distance and it will arm at approx 200 meters, I often do 200 meter shots when in fog. Get behind the target, match its course and let him have a magnetic shot. It will explode near the bow and sink it. :D

Except in storms where the bloody things blow up halfway to the target.

Thanks for all the responses.. It seems my problem was I was letting him get too close.. even with magnetic it wouldent explode under him. so this time I did things a bit different...

I fired one at the lead Escort, he was crippled. by now they knew where I was, so to hell with Silent running, i put full power and started to close in on the Cruisers. once I had a better angle I launched my rear tube at the escort behind me. it just narrowly hit him on the rear, destroying his rudder, and eventually sinking the ship.. he was down for the count. I fired 3 more torpedos, one at each of the cruisers. 2 were hit on the rear, and one I think the middle.

at this point the 3rd escort was closing in fast. so I started loading my rear tube. he tried DCing me, but I managed to dodge any heavy damage. we cris-crossed about 3 or 4 times before I was ready to strike. and I launched the rear torpedo, hitting right on the bow of the ship. he eventually ran himself into the depths as it quickly flooded.

One of the cruisers was crippled, and limped away at 6 Knots slowly slowing down until its engines flooded. I put another torpedo in her, and she sunk. I caught up to the next ship, making about 8 knots.. I put another in her, and she sunk as well.

the 3rd I couldent find and eventually my game crashed, and my saves seems to be corrupted

So now im going to try and do it all over. :arrgh!:

Yeah, on occasion

Sniper_Fox 01-14-08 10:49 AM

you're a lucky bastard... as soon as a destroyer locates me, its only a matter of time... i rarely can nab him when im detected. if its a flower corvette, ill blow ballasts and take him on with the deck gun... sounds like suicide... but not when you know how to out manouver them.
