Can't finish a mission

Hi all. This is my first post here. I’ve had the game for a couple of weeks, and am becoming addicted. It runs beautifully on my 3 gig Pentium D duel core with 2 gig of ram and an invidia 256 meg geforce 6600 video board. The game is well designed all around except for the manual; if it weren’t for this forum I don’t think I would have stuck with it. My first and last sub sim, until now, was Silent Service (I think) back in the early nineties. My last game was Star Craft, then War Craft–excellent games but too much micro-managing for me. I could use a little advice about Patrol Mission 3 Lifeguard Duty. I go to the star, see the grid with survivors, but I can’t pick them up. I bring the boat up to the little gray box bringing it as much to a stop as I can, scan the area through the binocs on deck, but there is no one there. I’ve gone up to the stationary boxes, and the slow moving ones but no luck. It was dark, so I waited until daylight–no help. I’ve tried everything I can think of but I can’t finish the mission (the star doesn’t gray out). Any suggestions? :-?

First off welcome ! :D

You are so right about the coaster..... er manual.

Here is a good thread addressing your question http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=111509

Good luck and good hunting.

Welcome aboard! If you are running version 1.3 of the game, downed pilots will be marked by a small red smoke cloud on the water when you are nearby. Your crew won't report this, so you will have to head to the bridge and look for yourself when you arrive near a location marked on the map. Also keep in mind that the pilots drift with the ocean current, so they won't be near the original position report as time passes. That means you should head to a position soon after it is reported to have the best chance of finding the pilot.
After you locate one, just head towards him and use the binocular view (not the TBT) and highlight the guy with the crosshair. When it turns red, hit the "rescue pilot" button in the menu bar and you should be good to go. Repeat as necessary to complete mission.

Hope this helps! :D

Do you have to be at ALL STOP? Have not had this mission, yet, on 1.3.

When the cross hair goes red hit the rescue button . Not everyone realises that you have to keep hitting the rescue button multiple times when the cross hair is red . Keep the cross hair red and keep hitting the button until the smoke goes out . Sometimes it takes a while . I have had to keep repositioning the cross hair until it goes red and hitting the button twenty , thirty or more times sometimes . Difficult in 15m/s winds .

OK, got it! It’s like having pieces of a puzzle and trying to put them together–blind.
The manual had me thinking I’m picking up survivors from a surface battle, and when I saw what looked like fires from burning oil slicks, I began looking for life boats. So, now, it’s red smoke from flares, with pilots bobbing up and down in a storm at night. Hmmmm. Bit of a problem here: the pilot is being sucked below the surface just as I’m bringing my cross-hairs to bear, but when he gets clear again, waves wash over my binocs, and he disappears. Yeah, it’s a realistic situation, but I don’t think this guys going to survive much longer, if he hasn’t drowned already. War is Hell. Thanks to everyone for helping out.

Glad you got it worked out.

That has to be one of the most frustrating 'missions' in the game. It was even worse prior to 1.3.

I spent two hours one time trying to find the first 'survivor' I finally just gave up.
