no subject, part 1
hello everyone,
posting some of the picutes i took today, of "big mamie", the lionfish, and dd joseph p kennedy jr. i just started going hog wild with the camera, and i had taken so many pics that they started to overwrite previously taken pics, i lost some real nice pics of the sub interior. sh4 devs did a fabulous job in the recreation of the helm, thats how i recognized where i was, when i walked into it, it looks just like the sh4 helm. in the conning tower, which all i could do was climb up the ladder to view it because they put plexi glass to prevent people from getting into the tower, there was continous pinging of sonar. if you closed your eyes for a moment, you could imagined the sub being hunted and pinged for by japanese dd's, it was awesome to hear. i lost pics of the scopes, and other equipment in most of the submarine, when i go back, i just have to concentrate of one ship at a time. ill tell ya, i was mighty impressed with the battleship, i have to go back soon, as it was so large i just couldnt see everything i wanted to see on her. it was so hot today, and inside the ships it was hotter, i was soaked in perspiration, but i thought, well this would probably be normal, when the ships were operational. i read in the boiler room of big mamie, that the temp would reach 125 degrees, and the men who worked there could not use the hand railings of the steel ladders, but had to slide down the railings with cloth around thier hands. since ive been home, all im doing is drinking gatorade and eating ice cream to no effect on my thirst. the subs deck gun magazines look like thier on the deck, not inside, about 20 feet from the stern gun. on a calm sea, or light sea state, i saw no problem with the gun firing as well as any land artillery piece. both the bb and submarine had the smell of diesel fuel in the engine rooms, and forward and rear torpedo rooms, i have nothing but admiration for the men who manned those ships, during the war. i lost many pics of the bb interiors too, sick bay, cic, opearating room, dentist office, fire direction for the main guns, and 5 inchers, just too bad. anyway, i hope you enjoy them, i also took pics of mainly japanese and island peoples artifacts, and even saw 3 japanese tourists on the bb, i wonder what they were thinking? from the deck of the destroyer, looking south http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/5...0001ov0.th.jpg standing on the high perch of the conning tower, looking down at bridge and tbt. http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/1...0028sm3.th.jpg from the high perch on conning tower, looking at the destroyer http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/9...0024ta4.th.jpg 37mm aa gun http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/5...0021fb8.th.jpg stern main guns and 40mm bofors http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/6...0054is7.th.jpg japanese aircraft recognition sheet on back of bofor turrent http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/1...0058jw3.th.jpg stern bofor, with pretty girl looking threw gun sight http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/9...0060pw2.th.jpg more bofors, how did those people get up to those 5 inchers? http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/8...0063ea0.th.jpg from bow looking toward forward main guns, bofors and 20 mm. http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/1...0067jm9.th.jpg big guns http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/4...0069fv1.th.jpg main galley of bb http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/3...0072ua7.th.jpg island girls grass shirt and top, HABA HABA http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/7...0081hd6.th.jpg |

Thanks for sharing these pictures with us gents. All the photos were good. The shot of the Arizona Memorial (where you can see the sunken wreckage) reminded me of the first time I saw it in r/l. Was ship's company on the U.S.S. New Orleans and we stopped in at Pearl on the way home after a WestPac to pick up some Tigers and catch a couple days liberty in Hawaii before we returned to San Diego.
Will never forget the somber and sad mood that came over me as I pondered what those last few moments were like for the men trapped in the wreckage, who must have known their death was certain. What a way to go, poor souls all, may they rest in peace. Regards |
skyhawk, how did you get up to the superstructure?

Greyrider,
We were transported to it via one of the U.S.S. New Orleans' ship-to-shore "skiffs" (I think that's what the squids called them) . I was a rifleman in an U.S.M.C. Honor Guard taking part in a memorial service for the fallen. OT: I also had the honor of being in the rifle detail that gave the rifle salute at the dedication of the U.S. Marine Lebanon Memorial Monument in Osceola, Arkansas (1/15/84) during my period of active duty as a U.S. Marine. The memorial was for all the Marines killed in the Beirut barracks bombing. These two experiences will go to my grave with me, I'll never forget them, or what they were about . . . Regards |
Thanks for sharing that with us SkyHawk,My we never forget our fallen......Semper Fi!!!!
