Deck gunning troop transport
:dead:
I just sunk a 8k BRT troop transport with my deckgun only as being out of torps and already on my way back to port. It was the very early morning, calm see and clear weather. But that ship looked really like a small merchant. But then it started firing back with 3 deck guns at us. Just one hit. But anyhow I decided not to dive but stay surface and bring some kilometers between us and the transport quickly. Showing it our rear side it hadn't much stuff to aim for too. Then we turned and started to head directly for it again at a distance of ~3000km. So we gave it a really hard to hit target but the transport acted as a giant flare. So good for us. After throwing half of our deck gun ammo at it it finally sank. Quite risky that choice, I know. But in that case it seems as it was the right one. Perhaps I should be a little more cautious in the future though . |
It's for those occasions that I always keep 1 or 2 torps, I call them the "just in case..." torps

Actually I had 2 ones left but both missed. I still don't know why .

You were VERY lucky not to get sunk, as even a merchant with 1 gun can cause serious damage to your sub - I know from experience. I tend not to use my deck gun in those situations - its just too risky.
Good job no aircraft were called in, then you would be in BIG trouble. |
I ended up with a hull integrity of 20%, batteries destroyed, unable to dive after a little encounter with one of those troopies. We barelly managed to crawl back to Lorient.
You were very lucky. |
i take out those basterds with the DG. :arrgh!:
just flank right towards them . the smaller your size the less they can hit you. :yep: its like this : when you attack a DD it comes straigt towards you making a small part. but when he turns you can have every hit couse he's bigger then. the front (_""_) (this has to look like one :-?) the side (___________/ so the key of not or less getting hit is... make yourselve as small as possible ;) |

I have to agree with the others though that this was quite a risky idea and don't think that I will do this again too soon :) |

you shal would wish it was a Troop Transport |
Hey, I'm not suicidal ;)

i am :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
but you should try it ;) (when dieing it doesnt count couse i made you do it) |
I just got out of port again with a fresh new paint on my boat. And a nicer emblem. Don't want to waste it on a kamikaze mission right now :)
|
i see... :nope:
you shal never know the true feeling of danger and fear :arrgh!: |
There was once I took on the HMS Rodney in a Type VIIB with the deck gun...
It was part of a TF, and I spent my last eels on it. It was enough to stop her dead in the water, but not sink her. :damn: So I dived, evaded the escorts and waited a full 24 (!) hours waiting for the rest of the TF to get far, far away, and hoping that the Rodney would sink. It didn't :( So I surfaced about 6 km away, behind her stern so that her main guns couldn't be brought to bear. I started shelling her, managed quite a few hits once I got the range, and ran out of ammo! :damn: |
I would of rammed her...:damn: or in fact just fired the AA guns at her while screaming Obsceneities.
|
thats pretty funny!:)
i actually dont mind too much when a DD heads straight towards me, i just fire off a torpedo and hit her straight in the "mouth" ! it works 80% of the time, every time! |
