whats the catch with the 2 periscopes?

I thought the observation & attack periscopes would be different, but they are not?

As far as I know, observation periscope was bigger and more powerfull at night (better vision) while the attack perisope had a thinner profile (showing less wakes) more suitable for daylight.

Day or night, it looks the same looking through them? :hmm:

They were not better at night as far as I know. The observation scope had a wider view angle. I also believe it magnified a bit better. Not sure on that one. Also, I believe it extended a bit further than the attack scope. I do not see much difference in the game either. It is what it is!

wider angle = more light gathering

Yes, as per the Cod sit, larger lense that benefitted gathering of more light. The Cod is a museum piece for sure. What a job they did restoring her. My project is the USS Torsk in Baltimore.

The Attack scope raised further than the Observation scope if you look in this picture of the U.S.S. Batfish, the attack is on the left, the thinner one and the observation scope is on the right, the really thick one.

So what's the third housing; the one that's not raised? (I'd look in one of my books but they're all in storage).

That is the SD radar housing, according to the Batfish's website it could be raised above water level as well.

so, basically a periscope is a telescope, right?
The observation periscope, having a bigger aperture should catch more light than a naked eye, so we should see more clear through it at night. At least this happens using a telescope.

Very good point, and true...more lens diameter more light at night :yep:

Don't know about night attacks, but using the observation scope in bad weather attacks usually helps me see better. There are some differences (in magnification too i belive), but they can be subtle. :)

I was also did not know why there were 2 scopes..
Thanks to you all !
