PressEvent Hamburg 2007

Marinesims and AOTD-Clan were on the press event of Silent Hunter 4 in Hamburg / Germany. The report is still into German ... English ones should follow.

Ah, finally the marinesims article from the event, thanks

Here are the key points from the preview for those who are impatient:

Again, I'll keep it mostly to stuff thats new for us...

- The demo shown shows SH4 at about 80% complete
- Most of the same keyboard commands have stayed
- The interface has been redesigned (enough screenshots and videos around to show that in detail)
- The notebook targetting method is gone and everything is done through the TDC directly.
- During attacks lights flicker and dials shatter etc, but injured and dead crew members also fall to the ground.
- The Damage control has become considerably more complex, and a little adjusting to the new system might be needed. (no more detail on this).
- Be prepared to set the graphics on high to see all the cool effects we've seen in screenshots

Don't know German but the shots are great.

Good stuff Boris - thanks. So in this preview we are told the above regarding damage control - but Neal's preview seemed to indicate that the cut-away stuff will not be there. Wonder how that's all gonna work.

Barkhorn.

Well obviously all that's happened is that it is no longer being represented by a cut-away sub, but it has infact been improved.

At least that's the way I read it.

You see that is what I am struggling w/ here. How does one improve this aspect of the game by taking away the visual presentation? Or is the info. presented visually another way? In which case why not stick w/ the familiar, and much loved, cut-away?

Barkhorn.

80% complete? This game is not making the mid-march launch with 20% left to go. When they've been working on the game for nearly 2 years, 20% is going to take a while to finish.

Boris 02-20-07 03:31 PM

Well I'm sure it's presented visually in some way :88)

We'll see, I don't think we'll be dissappointed. But I wonder what the 're-adjustment' to the new model is all about?

Keep in mind the demo copy they were shown is 80% complete. This doesn't mean the dev status was at 80% at the time.

Now, that's what I call kick-butt graphics:up:! Not sure about those uniforms, though, surely the US Silent Service crewmembers wore blue? I never even knew they let chicks enlist!

Oh well, nothing our modders can't change.

But this...

Holy smoke, that's an improvement over the VII-B's interior:o! Which boat is it, the Gato-class?

[Muses... I never knew they were that big]

Seriously, though:

I wonder if other things like random breakdowns and systems like depth gauges no longer working will be implemented.

No, sure they release to the press an old compilation of SH4 which they know that all is working well. Now I supouse they are testing the 100% game to fix minor problems (I hope) becasue as you said, 20% is too much.

trenken 02-20-07 03:38 PM

I have to say I really hope those screenshots were taken with the quality settings turned down. I'm really not impressed with the quality. Very pixelated. The water doesn't look any better than it did in 3 in those shots. Nothing really jumped out at me as looking spectacular in any way.

Hopefully it's just a matter of the settings and just not taking great shots. They've been working on this game for 2 years. I really hope it looks amazing.

Boris 02-20-07 03:39 PM

You didn't notice the transparency?

You can always turn on AA to get rid of the pixelation.

Like someone said earlier, the 80% build is probably just what they had at the event. There's no way they have 20% left to finish and the game still hasn't been delayed. They must have less than that to finish.
