type VII class U-Boats (GWX)
Does it make a difference which kind of VII I have? In SH3 vanilla all types of the VII had the same specs. Has that changed in GWX? If not I don't really get the point why I should get a VIIc/41 if it has the same specs as my beloved U-49 (VIIb).

IIRC, upgrading from a VIIB to a VIIC or VIIC/41 will give you 2 things, Increased range, and increased crush depth.

In real life, the Type VIIC was almost the same boat from the B...the primary differences being a deeper dive depth and a wee bit heavier and better range. The C/41's were modified with a better bow design (often called the Atlantic Bow) to reduce drag, mine laying ability, some had schnorkels, and the addition of better anti-aircraft defense in the wintergarten...and a deeper dive depth over the C. The deck guns after early '42 were all but gone.
And...in case in you've seen it referenced...the C/42 which was to supercede the C/41 was never produced....production went directly to the D model. |
In the SH3 code and files, there are only TWO Type VII's in truth.
1) VIIB 2) VIIC All variants of the VIIC (VIIC/41 and VIIC/42) share the exact same in-game characteristics as the regular VIIC with maybe the exception of armament. This is a game limitation that cannot be fixed without an SDK. Furthermore, IMHO... the VCII/42 is the most useless sub in the game. It only existed on paper in real life. |

So long as the crush depth for the /42 isn't realistic I agree. And by realistic, I mean ~450 meters. :)

How can anything be realistic when everything about the boat was theoretical?
