New WIP Ship - Proteus Class Collier

After Iambecomelife said that he was no longer releasing his older merchants, I decided to try building a collier similar to the Nereus and Proteus (US Navy colliers sold to Canada in late 1941 and lost to unknown causes shortly after) - (I always wanted to build one of these). It is not finished yet of course - a couple of cranes need to be moved slightly, the lifeboats need to be moved, the hatchcovers need to be adjusted, and an ID image needs to be made. Also, I managed to ruin to UV Mapping of the upper level of the bridge, and thus it may have to be rebuilt.:shifty: Anyway, here is a WIP shot:

BTW - There were actually seven vessels in the Proteus class, although the number is usually listed as four. The four well know ones are as follows:

USS Cyclops - Lost (unknown cause), February, 1918.
USS Jupiter - Converted to CV-1 USS Langley (Sunk by Japanese a/c, 1942)
USS Nereus - Lost (unknown cause), December, 1941.
USS Proteus - Lost (unknown cause), December(?), 1941.

The other three were USS Orion, USS Neptune, and USS Jason. All three were scrapped in the late 1930s.

Oh God, what a long ship. Wow. Good show.

It's a keeper AG. Looks very nice, well done.

Hopefully this will be able to be added to GWX later on.

This looks really great. Thanks for you efforts in adding additional shipping in the merchant class. Look forward to it's completion!

Release

I expect to make a release this weekend at the latest.:hmm: If I didn't have so much RL work to do, the vessel would be ready by tomorrow though.:shifty:

I like colliers and I love ships with goalpost masts, so I'm pretty much in heaven now. The derricks look wonderful-what ship parts did you use to get that "X" shape?

I've tried to find more information on the "Nereus" and "Proteus", but there isn't all that much, even on the 'net. Their loss isn't very surprising; they would have been in their 20's and 30's by the outbreak of WWII, and I think you said earlier that this class of ships wasn't particularly well maintained. Bad weather, bad rust, and a stressed, 30-y/o hull full of heavy ore-NOT a good mix. :-? IIRC there was an important chairperson of a certain company (Canada Steamship Lines?) who died in one of the sinkings.

How long is she anyway? Can you post a comparison shot of her next to a destroyer and/or cruise ship?

Proteus

@ Iambecomelife: Thank you very much for your comliments. I would still like to see your original bulk carrier release, but I also look forward to new ones from you as well (I really like these types of bulk carrier designs:D). In response to your question, the x-shaped part of the derrick is actually two crossed parts of the Large Cargo's cranes which have been secured in sailing position (the Proteus class actually had double sets of cranes on each derrick, but I only included one so that they wouldn't intersect each other).

@ Safe-Keeper: This vessel is actually exactly the same length as the Transport (NPTR). The only reason she looks longer is because I lowered most of the centre of the hull. An illusion, of sorts...

@ everyone else: Thank you very much - hopefully, you will all get another ship tonight.:D Not getting much RL work done though, but that can wait until tomorrow...

My work on the Proteus has proceeded much faster then I thought it would. I now only have to move a couple of hatch covers slightly, move those lifeboats (which are still not in the right position), move the flag on the y axis, and make an ID image. Expect a release tonight or tomorrow...
