Reasons not to "buy" a type IX

I'd really like to get a type IX boat but there are several reasons why I don't do it:

First of all I hate Lorient, it's just such a little harbor. You don't have much room to maneuver and TC does not allow you to go faster (I know that you can change that with SH3 Commander, but it's still a reason for me;)) Secondly (in 1942) you don't get the "Falke" torpedo. It's such a neat weapon against escorts, but apparently only the VII boats get it.
So what do you think: Should I get one, is it worth it?:hmm:

Ask 3 different people and you'll get 5 different answers. My advice is weigh the pros and cons in your own mind and then do what you think will make you happiest.

Why would one type of boat get on while the other doesnt? Is this a game thing or is that the way it really happened? I wonder, can you transfer back to a VII after you have taken command of an IX boat?

22 to 14 torpedoes gives you (on a normal patrol) about 2 times more sunk ships so, yes, take it by any means. ;)

Yes, you can. You just have to dismiss the excess crew.

If you want to enjoy a new challenge, yes. You get a larger boat which is a plus and a minus. You can carry more torpedos but your dive time is longer. I enjoyed moving to the IX and taking on the cross-Atlantic missions placing me on the east coast of the US. But I found out quickly that running with decks awash is a must to stay alive under the air cover that really gets nasty at this point in the war.

All in all, you just have to decide if the switch is for you. A lot of what you do in the VII becomes totally different in the IX.

Let us know what you decide to do!

Personally I will be taking an IX when I get the chance. I did 11 patrols in type VII's before I had to reinstall. Now that I am starting over again in 39 I figure that I will be ready for a change when the time comes.

i had some good times in my VIIB but the IX is definitely a lot of fun. there are places you would never have gone in the VII, mind you the trip over the atlantic is a bore fest but its a target rich opportunity over there. i miss my stern tubes sometimes though :(

Feels too big, not as sleek and sexy as the VIIs.

I like the IX, but its no VII.

My first career I took a type IX boat early and loved it.early on their great but by late 43 the divetime was a real drawback:down:

I think Doenitz himself was more of a VII fan himself. At least thats what I gather from what I have read. I also thought I had read somewhere that there were type VIIs used across the atlantic with the help of milkcows. Has anyone else heard anything like that?

Hello

I really like the IXC. It's a bit big in comparison with the VII but it compensates with the extra torpedos and extended range. Actually it's quite maneuverable and very good at avoiding DDs. The fact that you have the ability to hunt in the North and South American coast and the Tanker-infested Caribbean is too tempting for me not to own one:D

Obviously if we could afford the XXI life would have been wonderful but we can't always have what we want (as the song goes) :D :D :D

Well I always go for the 2nd Flottilla why have a little boat that can only go to mid Atlantic when you can get an IXC or later an IXD2 that can go any where try going to Penang in a VIIB or VIIC I doubt if you ever get there (unless you got unlimited range ).Okay IX boats are big IXD2 takes something like 42 seconds to dice to pd torpedo load out excellent the IXD2 got 24 fish you don't see that in a VIIB or VIIC.
