From SH5 to SH3?
Hey all,
My first experience with the Silent Hunter series was (sadly) SH5. Even with many of the great modifications it just doesn't seem to have the same authentic feel as SH3 (from what i see in "lets play videos"). I think my biggest issue is that i'm big on visual fidelity and the apparent difficulties getting my native resolution (2560x1440) working. I know this may be a loaded questions, but would the more seasoned Silent Hunter vets recommend checking out 3? Thanks for the input and consideration. RushTheBus |
I certainly would recommend it. From a fluid random campaign to assignments all over the world, from simple single-merchant ambushes to harrowing nighttime convoy battles, from empty seas for days on end to crowded harbors teeming with life, from the primitive Type II "dugout canoe" with its five torpedoes to the "workhorse" Type VII to the Mighty Type IX long-range beast to the futuristic "Electro-boot" Type XXI, SH3 has it all. You can have as little or as much to do and see as you like. With several major supermods, each one designed for a different experience, and SH3 Commander giving real historic names to the ships you sunk and more than 100 different merchant types to sink, SH3 is the only version that gives you everything.

I appreciate the insight Steve. Can anyone point me to a thread or particular modification / series of mods which are fan favorites?

Also, for a high resolution fix, try Ahnenerbe's WideGUI

Thanks guys! I've got GWX installed. I guess my biggest concern is past that what are the most popular / immerse mods and do i need to be enabling them in a specific order (like in SH5)?
|
As far as I'm concerned, there's no better immersion "mod" than SH3 Commander
You will need the extra config file for GWX, and I must say, the two together make for an awesome experience. |
Yup, got it up and running! Question though, do i have to run through each tutorial before i can set out to sea?
Also, in terms of immersion i was also talking in regards to visual fidelity. |

As I said, everybody has a different favorite. |
You can skip the tutorials if you want. While you can get something out of them, I find it much more useful to learn by doing single missions. As far as graphical immersion, I can't contribute much more on that point as I run GWX at 1360x768 with Widescreen MaGui (my monitor won't run 1920x1080), so you likely already have me beat. Maybe check out Sailor Steve's LSH link above, as I believe it's the graphics king of the mega-mods. Do be aware that you must choose between either GWX or LSH, as they are not compatible with each other.

Thanks for the reply guys. I guess i want as much authetnticity / immersion as possible in terms of the following:
I came across this guys videos on youtube and i really like the feel he has (he has a mod list but im not sure if he has enabled them correctly / in the same order, etc): http://youtu.be/6j1QTqQrOAA Sound Fidelity of the submarine interior and exterior, crew, merchant ships, etc Effects Water & weather Geography (ports, terrain, etc) things of this nature. I just am looking for an immersive and authentic experience. I'm not sure if i should use GWX or something similar as a base mod and build off of that with other individual mods or simply use a super/mega mod alone. For what its worth, im in the team speak now if anyone wanted to discuss via voice :) |
I'd just download them all and give them a try one at a time. I read countless opinions on NYGM vs GWX but until I actually played both of them, I couldn't make a decision.

i recommend the merchant fleet mod FMs new interiors for the type VII the updated shipnames from steve and any of the frogs models

Thanks for the assistance Steve and everyone else. So, i think i compiled a small but sufficient mod list (at least for the time being). Only issue is i just started my career via SH3 Commander and the interior of my VIIA does not seem to present with FM's interior mod (there is no meat hanging and such). The other issue is that for some reason, after i establish a career in SH3 commander it does not seem to save my career there...ie i cant re-launch my career via SH3 commander (i can through the game itself)...any ideas?
Here is my mod list. http://s10.postimg.org/dsr40aimx/modsenabled.png |
Just a quick update - i see that the interior was only for the VIIB, my aplogizes for mixing that up. I also figured out the issues with SH Commander 3 and seem to have that working correctly.
The biggest issues at this point is 1) I don't seem to receive radio message tones (i use the Thompson sound pack and use his Morse code which overwrite his base one in the pack) - would using time compression of x32 cause that to break? Also...when i send a patrol report back to BDU after i reach my proper grid and commence patrol i receive a blank message back (this is the first patrol given by GWX in early August of 1939). Thanks ahead of time :) |

Ahoy RushTheBus,
since it seems to me you are still new in the "SH3 supermods" thing, and I remember how much time didi it take to me to ambient myself in the extremely huge "modding ecosystem" that (thank Modders!) exisits for this game I'd like to catch your attention and direct it at the link I have in my sign... Chances are that if you do not already know about it you will find this very useful :) |
